Mardi Gras 2010 from Jami Davis on Vimeo.

>A good friend of ours who was part of our New Orleans team, Ted, took some great photos of people during our time there last week. I love how Ted uses his camera to engage with all kinds of people, seeking to capture the invisible qualities of God evident in the beauty of people and tell their stories. Check out more of his photos here.

We're on the road again (stopping for the night at the Millers' place
in Dallas) after 5 amazing days in New Orleans. New Orleans is a
beautiful city.

I was really proud of students, who tackled each day on the streets
during the Mardi Gras celebrations with joy and passion. We had a lot
of laughs as a team! Each night we would walk the streets of the
French Quarter praying, talking to people and looking for
opportunities to serve and bless people.

On Monday night we met Ricky Breaux, the "Soapman". He asked whether
he could show some of us his art pieces, which he had carved out of
bars of soap. His motivation in life and in his art was to bless
people and bless his city. I was touched by his heart.

The city of New Orleans is filled with amazing people such as Ricky,
who have endured great tragedy together and who continue to express
the character of God through their art, hospitality and joy.

We drove 2 days, through snow (in Texas!?!) and rain to arrive in
beautiful New Orleans.

We've spent the past couple days getting to know the city of New
Orleans, empathizing with its wounds, enjoying its beauty. We've spent
the past 2 evenings on te streets, praying and connecting with people.
New Orleans is a fascinating city, with so much culture, joy and
beauty. We hope to draw out the gifts that God's given this city, and
inspire others to hope and love.

hey friends,

Here’s a quick update about what’s going on in our world this month.
The pregnancy’s going really well! We’ve started taking some classes at the hospital to get ready for the delivery and taking care of our little one. March 21 is coming fast!
The W.I.S.E. School has been flying by! Our 6 students have really come ready to learn and grow, which has made for a fun school to lead. Tomorrow morning we’ll be driving out to New Orleans for our Mardi Gras outreach. Last year this was the highlight of the school, we made some great friends and learned a lot. Mardi Gras brings an intense atmosphere, drawing all the crazy party-ers, as well as the crazy Christians (decked out with 10 foot signs and all), so observation in itself is a learning experience! We’ll be back in Denver on the 17th. I’ll try to post updates on our blog and Twitter, so check back to stay posted!
Please pray for our trip. Pray for smooth travels, and opportunities to interact with people, pray effectively, and serve the people of New Orleans.
Unfortunately, Anna won’t be coming this year, please pray for a great week for her as she’ll be home on her own. Also pray for a continued healthy pregnancy!
Thanks so much for your friendship and support!
love brent and anna

We’re approaching the end the third week of WISE school 2010. We’ve had a great time together as a group, lots of laughs, sharing, and learning already.

Last week Ted, one of our staff, taught about “Identity in Christ,” and did a great job of leading the group to consider how understanding who we are in Christ affects how we treat other people and engage with this world.
This week we visited a Jewish synagogue, Muslim mosque and a Hare Krishna temple during our “Comparative Religions” week. As we chatted with these religious leaders, we were honored by their hospitality and warmth, and challenged by their personal honesty as they shared about their journey.
There’s the saying, “Nobody cares what you know unless they know you care.” During these visits, our challenge was to listen in a desire to understand their viewpoint and build relational bridges, as opposed to assuming our “rightness” and trying to convince anyone of anything. I was proud to be part of a group that sincerely cared about each religious leader we met, and shared love through great questions and listening ears.
Also, thanks Casey for skyping in this week. Your insights about living in Thailand fueled our thoughts and conversations throughout the week.

Tomorrow kicks off WISE school 2010 at YWAM Denver. I (Brent) will be leading this school of 6 students (5 Americans, 1 Korean). Also beginning tomorrow are the Boarders’ DTS and regular DTS. We’ll have a total around 50 students joining us for the winter quarter.

Pray that this would be an amazing time of growth for our students, and that us as staff would have energy and wisdom to effectively invest in these students’ lives and futures.

Manke family
Brandt family

Twas picture time this Christmas for our family, as my (Brent’s) immediate family drove from across Canada and the continent to be together for a few days, and the extended Brandt family came from around the globe be to all together for Christmas for the first time in eighteen years. Is that picture-worthy or what!
We had a blast spending time with everyone. There’s something about family that’s super cool. I hope you had the chance to appreciate your family and close friends this Christmas.

It’s christmas time in our apartment! It’s hard for us to decorate, seeing as we’re going to be out of town for the 2 weeks leading up to the 25th, but today Anna picked up some lights and ornaments. Yay for christmas lights!
